Saving Clam using the Glucose method

These beautiful animals of the Tridacnidae family belong to the phylum of mollusks filter feeders, are very delicate animals in aquarium cause they are subject to stress during the endless trips from tropical regions or weakened due to various environmental factors.

Inside the cloack of the clams are the zooxanthellae, photosynthetic symbiotic algae that are responsible for the beautiful color of corals and absorbing carbon dioxide released by guests in return produce nutrients such as glucose that provides these giant bivalve the energy needed to perform vital functions. If these energies diminish the animal weakens and goes against decay. The more the animal is decayed the less chance to adapt to changes in environmental factors.

 

Glucose Method

The Glucose method is a method that allows to improve the energy production of the symbiotic algae through the exposure of the bivalve tissues with Sucrose or glucose. The Sucrose acts decomposing into Glucose, Fructose and carbon hydrate through acids and enzymes that are usually metabolized and converted into other compounds such as ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which are of vital importance for the production of energy. As soon as the solution of sugars Carbohydrates comes into contact with the animal automatically penetrate osmotic pressure for enhancing the production of energy. By using the glucose (dextrose) directly instead of Sucrose (common Sugar) it skips the process of decomposition, and it helps the animal to quickly absorb the glucose they need.

Glucose soaking 

Take a container and pour:

1  tablespoon of coffee Glucose (Dextrose) every 2 gallons of aquarium water, insert the Clam in the container by avoiding as much as possible contact with the air, allow to soak for at least 1 hour, after which put the animal in a tank without throwing the water of Glucose soak. Repeat every day for at least 3 consecutive days.

Avoid: Soaking for healthy animals to emphasize growth, because the treatment would just hurt the bivalve.
